Thirty-five Years Later and Music Festival Comes to
the Town of Woodstock
Woodstock, NY June 16, 2004
Finally a Woodstock music festival comes to the Colony Cafe
this July for three days starting the 16th. Woodstock’s Jazz and
folk festival creators, Dan Schneider and Michael Veitch wish to celebrate Woodstock’s rich variety of local talent by giving artists the opportunity to participate in this first annual jazz and folk
festival. Sponsoring the show is HVTC (Hudson Valley Technology and Commerce), a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote smart growth in the Hudson Valley.
"Most folks don’t realize [the] Woodstock Music
Festival never happened here. We’re trying to bring
music back to Tinker Street with this festival,"
Veitch said. The festival brings together more than
20 artists from the Woodstock area and beyond to
celebrate jazz and folk at the historic Colony Cafe in
the heart of Woodstock. Such legendary artists
include John Herald, Laurel Masse, Bar Scott, Julie
Last, and Michael Veitch. Herald, founding member of
the Greendriar Boys is accompanying Scott, Last and
Veitch at Friday’s performance of "Songwriters in the
Round."
Masse is a founding member of Grammy award-winning
vocal group Manhattan Transfer and will headline
Saturday’s performance. Other acts scheduled for the
night include, Abbey Hollander, Karen Whitman and Rick
Pantell, Simone Housen, and Tony DeSare (Sinatra
Tribute performer).
Sunday's show will run all afternoon and into the night with over a dozen performances hosted by Studio Stu. Confirmed for the closing day of the festival include a 'gourmet blend' of artists. Anna Cheek, Carolyn Baxter, Deb Silver, Dave Mason, Ras T Asheber, Rosemary Camera, Tom Desisto, and Valen Swenson. More acts to be scheduled.
Profits from the festival will go towards "Music in
the Schools" a HVTC music program in which local
artists teach students various techniques such as;
sound engineering, singing and songwriting,
performance art, etc. The HVTC Music SIG recently
produced a two volume CD entitled, A Taste of Woodstock.
The compilation features 36 local artists.
The HVTC hopes to draw from that talent pool to develop the
"Music in the Schools" program.
Tickets are being sold in advance on the website by
Visa/MasterCard or Pay Pal. They are also available
at several locations including three in Woodstock The
Golden Notebook (25 Tinker St.), Rhythms (68 Tinker
St.), and The Colony Cafe (22 Rock City Rd.). In the
Kingston area, tickets can be bought at Uptown Cigar
Company (32 John St.). Tickets cost $20 per session
unreserved and $40 for reserved seating. A festival
pass is available for only $50.
